Thank You – a message from QDoc Festival Co-Directors

QDoc 11 is in the books! Thank you to everyone who helped make QDoc Film Fest 2017 one of the best yet!

We were delighted to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Portland’s Queer Documentary Film Festival with you at The Hollywood Theatre. We felt honored to step into the roles of Festival Directors this year, and we’re particularly grateful to have worked so closely with the talented and amazing duo of QDoc co-founders David Weissman and Russ Gage (lovingly nicknamed “Duss”) and look forward to carrying out the wonderful legacy they have built over the past decade. We are equally grateful to you, our audience, for your faithful and ongoing support.

We were extremely inspired by this year’s lineup of films and hope you were as well. We paid tribute to a beloved storyteller and gay rights pioneer, we met a legendary LA club owner and trailblazer, we journeyed through the life of a Latin-American singer and icon, we revisited the era of McCarthyism and elicited parallels with today’s political landscape, we celebrated the joy of an all-male, comic ballet troupe founded more than 40 years ago, and so much more!

We were thrilled that so many filmmakers and subjects joined us this year and relished each round of thought-provoking Q&A’s after each film. There is nothing quite like sitting in the theatre with our LGBTQ friends and allies, and we thank you so much for being there with us.

Documentary filmmaker Patricio Guzmán said it best: “A country without documentary films is like a family without a photo album.” To all of the filmmakers and subjects, your work is so important. Thank you for telling your stories, their stories, our stories.

We could not bring those stories here and to the screen if it wasn’t for our team, our volunteers, our sponsors and our supporters.

Many other teammates make this festival possible including Christopher Healy (Sponsorship), Melinda Kowalska (Technical and House Management), Matt Leavitt (Graphic Design), Ericka Heidrick (Community Outreach), Jimmy Radosta (Head Wordsmith), Melanie Altaras (Website Management), Alan Colley (Filmmaker Hospitality), Kristy Conrad (Theater Liaison), Francie King, Liza Tennis, Laure ParsonsJewel Robinson and all of our key volunteers.

We are grateful for the longtime support of many including Bill Dickey, Les Lewis & Rick Watkins, John Forsgren & Dan Winter, Tom Barreto and Thomas Lauderdale.

Of course, a huge thanks goes out to all of our sponsors including 2017’s presenting sponsor, Umpqua Bank, as well as HBO Documentary Films and Nike. A special shout-out goes to those sponsors who have been with us every year from the very beginning: Morel Ink, Eyes on Broadway, Pink Martini and Hotel deLuxe. We are also grateful for the Regional Arts & Culture Council and Pride Foundation. Thank you for the important work you do and for your support.

To the entire team at The Hollywood Theatre, you are an absolute pleasure to work with. Thank you to Doug Whyte, Kristy Conrad, Virginia Durost and the board for your partnership. QDoc is proud to be a fiscally sponsored project.

Huge thanks to our media sponsors Portland Mercury and Tagg Magazine as well.

We appreciate you all and are so grateful for your ongoing support. Please save the date for May 17th through the 20th 2018 and we’ll see you next year!

With gratitude and love,

Deb Kemp and Molly King (aka “Dolly”), Festival Co-Directors
